Diarrhea in Dogs: Symptoms, Treatment and prevention
Dogs are very active and playful, and they easily swallow things they get on the ground. But you must take care of what your dog eats. Dogs too can suffer from diarrhea like us. Diarrhea in dogs is not a major concern, but if it lasts for more than a day, it may lead to a serious health issue or other problems in our dogs. There are various causes of diarrhea and proper treatment must be provided whenever you detect any of such symptoms.
Symptoms of diarrhea in dogs
It is very easy for you to detect that your dog is suffering from diarrhea as it has symptoms which are very much common. Your dog will have loose or liquid stools frequently, flatulence, there would be blood or mucus in stool, changes in the volume of stool and straining to defecate. Other symptoms include lethargy, dehydration, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite weight loss and an increased urgency to defecate. Apart from all this, if your dog suffers from black diarrhea, you must make sure that you take him to the vet immediately, to avoid further problems.
Treatment for diarrhea in dogs
Once you know that your dog is suffering from diarrhea, you can start taking some measures to stop the problem. You must avoid giving him any food for 12-24 hours but do give plenty of fresh and clean water to avoid dehydration. You should consult your vet for further treatment if the problem persists for more than a day, or if our dog happens to be lethargic or suffers from fever, vomiting, dark-colored or bloody stools, unexpected weight loss and decreased appetite. Once you take your dog to the vet, he or she will do the needful tests to know the severity of the internal condition of the dog.
Since small puppies are more prone to diseases, you must directly consult your vet if your puppy is suffering from diarrhea.
Prevention of diarrhea in dogs
Even healthy dogs can sometimes suffer from diarrhea, so it is very important to keep a watch on the activities of your dog. With some day to day trips, you can make sure that you prevent your dog from suffering from such an illness. You must keep a check that proper and timely vaccines are given to your dog. Also, you should keep a watch on the animals around your dog, avoid letting him ingest feces of other animals. If you ever plan to switch your dog’s food, you must do it gradually by mixing it with his current food to ensure a better transition for your dog. It is recommended to give 80% of the old food and 20% of the new food in the beginning, then slowly gradually increase it. See whether your dog is enjoying the new food or no. If you see positive signs then gradually increase the quantity to 100%.
